The Real Secret: There Are No Secrets

The Real Secret:
There Are
No Secrets

Don’t Spin Your Wheels, Spin Records Instead!

Listen: I’ve been there. I’ve struggled and failed, I’ve procrastinated and missed deadlines, I’ve been depressed and confused and alone. This is a normal part of learning how to make music and it is to some extent inevitable, but it doesn’t have to go on forever. The rough part only takes as long as you let it take. It can take the rest of your life, or it can end today. Let’s see if any of this sounds familiar:
You know there is music in you. You hear music in your head while you're awake and you dream about it when you’re asleep. You love listening to music and can’t imagine life without it. Music is there for you when you need it. It lifts you up when you’re down and brings you highs better than any drug.
When you try to finish your own music all of that passion starts turning sour, bringing you lows that make you question everything. When you compare your work to the work of your heroes, you wonder why you even bother…

'I’ll never be THAT good, maybe I should just give up?’

Sessions sound amazing the night before but sound awful in the morning. Plugins and sample packs sound awesome on YouTube but once you load them up they fall flat. Your expensive gear is collecting dust, your hard drive is full of tools you never use, and your WIP (work in progress) folder borders on pathological.

That was me. For YEARS.

But then I got a little help from my friends: When I finally accepted that it was next to impossible for me to figure it all out on my own, and started treating music as a collaboration instead of a competition, it was like a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. When I started learning from established producers who were making the music I wanted to make, instead of dry tutorials from educated wanna-bes, I learned the workflow and started finishing my tracks. When I learned to make the process FUN for myself, I became addicted to making music and the 10,000 hours it takes to become an expert flew by before I knew it.
Music saved my life. Making music took me places I never imagined. When it was my turn to give back I created Producer Dojo, and now the Dojo has a life of its own. I knew it would be good, but I never thought it would be THIS good. Your success is my success, and the success of our Producer Dojo members is living proof that the system works.

All you have to do is keep showing up.

Our system, our senseis and the Dojo community will keep you on track, keep you accountable and make sure you meet your goals. It’s not impossible to learn everything on your own, but it’s a LOT harder, and it takes at least five times as long. Progress is all about momentum, and you can’t have momentum without direction. You can take a long zig-zag path full of dead ends and false starts OR you can learn from those who’ve made the mistakes and save yourself a ton of time and effort.
Every producer is different,  but the problems we face are the same. We think external factors will solve our problems but the real issues are internal: we get distracted by shiny objects and infinite possibilities. We procrastinate. We get in our own way. We fear we are not living up to our potential. We have trouble finishing things. We have trouble meeting deadlines and we have trouble taking accountability.
The good news is that this is all normal so you don’t have to feel bad about it. But you’re not going to escape this cycle if you don’t commit to making a change. If you want to solve a problem once and for all, you have to tackle the root of the problem.

That solution begins with you, right here, right now deciding that enough is enough and making the commitment to Remix YOUR Life by joining Producer Dojo today.

Imagine how it’s going to feel when you cross those goals off the calendar on your wall.

Imagine how you’ll feel when your friends hear your progress and say, “Damn! What have you been DOING!?”

Imagine how you'll feel knowing that you’re living a life authentic to your OWN values, setting your own rules and living up to your own measure.

Imagine how you’ll feel when someone at a party asks what you do and you can point them to a sick artist page filled with all of your awesome new music.

You’ll know you put your money where your mouth is and did something of real value that you can be proud of for the rest of your life.

When you taste that feeling, you’ll get hooked and then it becomes easy. We’ll get you through the hard part as quickly as possible. It’s like a recipe we’ve made a thousand times before: if you follow the steps it won’t take long.

YES, I'M READY!

Supported by Science

Hacking Discipline By Making it Fun

Playing music on stage is fun, but sometimes making music seems like work. The reason it seems like work is that you’re not making it fun enough for yourself. When you make it fun it becomes addictive and then the hours fly by. Our proven methods are built on behavioral science and our members are the living proof that they work.  Producer Dojo is a  record label that promotes our artists-members. Our competitors are schools that at the end of the day, only provide limited education with no real opportunity for progress or real results. We’re proud of our members and we want you to be one of them!

Here’s how it works:

We hack discipline by making it fun. We get together online frequently, we support and encourage each other, and we all share everything we learn with the community. There is strength in numbers, but there is also FUN in numbers! We get together every month to celebrate the progress of our members and we give away prizes to the most deserving members. We have amazing prizes, too: you can get one-on-one time with me personally,  and we give away software,  memberships at Producer Dojo, and even physical hardware prizes like a Maschine Plus standalone from Native Instruments!

Having a Guide makes all the difference:

Working one-on-one with a coach will be the backbone of your growth in Producer Dojo. This is hands down the most important part of this membership. I cannot stress this enough.  When you have a professional producer working alongside you, you'll take the fast path around the noise and be able to focus on embracing your strengths and strengthening your weaknesses in every phase of your production. I'm 100% positive that your music means something personal to you; and your training deserves to be personalized for you.

Our Dojo Senseis have gone through my programs, they’ve released on my label, and they know EXACTLY what it takes to gain significant progress in production and the music industry. They know because they've already done it.

Every month you’ll meet with one of our Dojo Senseis and you’ll get an hourlong video session. During this session, your Sensei will help you break through any of the blocks you may be currently facing. They’ll be your coach and they’ll hold you accountable to your goals and deadlines.

Not only will you get one-on-one coaching with your Sensei, but I’m throwing in a couple of badass bonuses!

You'll have EVERYTHING you need to be successful.

The Power Of Choice

I geek out on people who transform their lives, we all do. It’s inspiring, special and reminds us that WE ourselves have the power to change our lives at almost every level. That’s the beauty of free will: you have the power to make a decision and Remix Your Life.

While I was backpacking through Southeast Asia, I met an American doctor and his family on an extended vacation. He’d written books, fallen in love, had a beautiful family and a thriving career, yet somehow, also managed enough free time that he could float down a river with a bunch of young people stopping to chug Lao beer and jump off Tarzan ropes. Clearly this carefree doctor was a man I could learn from so I asked his advice. I will never forget his words, he said:

“You can change anything you want about your life, Dylan. Don’t like your job? Get a new job. Don’t like your city? You can move. Don’t like the people around you? Go find new ones. The only things you can’t change are permanent health problems and the way you’ve spent your time. Most people don’t realize this or maybe they’re too afraid so they just do the same thing forever and then hate their lives. Don’t fall into that trap!”

Humans are geniuses at rationalizing our decision making. No matter what you believe, there is a website out there with all the confirmation you need telling you that you’re on the right path. There are a million reasons NOT to make music, write a novel or go to Burning Man. They’re expensive, they take lots of work, you don’t know how they’ll turn out, blah blah blah, on and on and on. We don’t make decisions rationally, we make them emotionally. The thing to realize is that we all have a metaphorical demon inside that gives us terrible advice all day and makes us say things about ourselves we would NEVER be mean enough to say to another person. This demon feeds on fear and shits poison. It’s your job to slay this demon by choosing love. If you face every choice as a choice between fear and love it is a lot easier to see through the demon and make less regrettable decisions.

In this fascinating study a large group of older people were asked to reflect on what they regretted when they looked back on their lives. One would assume that older people reflecting on their lives would regret some things they had done. People do awful things every day after all, but as it turns out, the subjects regretted the things they HADN’T done much more acutely. It turns out it is much easier to forgive ourselves for making mistakes than it is to forgive the lack of initiative. This makes sense in retrospect; humans make mistakes and we are all only human, but the price of our humanity is the inevitability of death and the reality of all the time we wasted. I am reminded of this anonymous quote:

“The definition of Hell: The last day you have on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become.”

So how then are we to avoid slipping into inertia and apathy, procrastinating and distracting ourselves while we run out the clock? How can we learn to delay gratification, prioritizing what we TRULY want over what we want in the moment? I have thought long and hard about this. I’ve studied some of the best science on this subject, and I’ve experimented on myself and my students for fifteen years now. I’ve learned to hack my psychology with a simple, easy to follow recipe for tricking myself out of being a lazy bastard and into creating the life I always wanted. And, I’ve learned to replicate this effect on thousands of others. I call this art of lifestyle design ‘Remix Your Life’ and it kicks off every January at Producer Dojo. Now let’s talk about the science of why it works.

SCIENCE!

According to many studies (like this one from Gail Matthews at Dominican University) there are three magic tweaks that, when used together, are able to more than DOUBLE the rate at which people achieve their personal goals, regardless of whether the goals are about fitness, creativity, or anything else.

REMIX YOUR LIFE three factors:

These three factors used together are how I have been able to Remix My Life, finally getting regular with working out, quitting drinking, losing weight, writing in my journal daily, and even doing timer beats every single day for over three months!

Another major factor in the determination of success is Loss Aversion: a cognitive bias first identified in 1979 by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in their groundbreaking paper ‘Prospect Theory. In this paper, they showed that we value the pain of loss more than we value the pleasure from gaining the same thing, even when it is clearly irrational to do so. Athletes perform better when they are behind and there is a distinct psychological advantage to being the challenger vs the defending champion. Here’s another classic example of loss aversion: In a tennis club with a free outdoor court (weather permitting) and an indoor court that requires $50 to reserve - what do you think happens on a nice day? Most people who paid the $50 will play the objectively inferior game of indoor tennis so they don’t count the $50 as a loss in their memory afterwards.

I experienced the power of loss aversion for myself at the turning of the millennium. I was the DJ in a breakdance crew full of straightedge vegans who were always making fun of me for smoking, drinking, eating bad food and not exercising enough. They had a bet going where they all put in $50 and promised no drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, unhealthy or non-vegan food and working out every day for three months. One slip up and your $50 went into the pot and those who remained impeccable got to split the pot at the end. They saw me as easy money and asked me to join in. I saw them as pretentious vegetabullies and wanted to beat them out of spite. One by one, I saw them all fall. At the end of the three months I emerged a changed man. I had developed a taste for discipline and home cooking that has stayed with me to this day.

So all of this is to say that one of the MOST motivating things you can do is to commit, and to place a bet on YOURSELF with some real consequences (after the 30 day trial period of course). You don’t need to bet a lot of money because the Dojo membership is extremely affordable, but even the small amount we charge has proven to be enough to tap into loss aversion and help motivate our members to be their best.

I'M READY TO REMIX MY LIFE

You Have Nothing To Lose

You Have Nothing
To Lose

Speaking of refunds, we always allow 30 days for you to change your mind and ask for a refund.  Although I don’t consider myself Buddhist, I try to live by their Eightfold Path, a set of best practices which includes ‘right livelihood’ squarely in the middle. In this day and age it’s also really hard to go around being a jerk without it blowing up in your face and taking you down. As a result we have an extremely high customer satisfaction rate. I know that having this policy means you could sign up, raid the entire website, do a session with one of our Senseis and then get a full refund, but I’m willing to bet that you won’t do that. I win this bet every time because the Dojo is the real deal and it transforms lives every day. I have the utmost confidence that once you’ve made your commitment, turned your goals into deadlines and made some new friends in the Dojo, you’ll want to keep training and celebrating your victories with us. Check out what other members just like you have to say about their time with Producer Dojo.

Now we are at a crossroads and you have a decision to make

You can keep doing what you’ve always done and keep getting the same results you’ve always gotten. OR, you can choose to commit to this path and Remix Your Life with Producer Dojo. Do you have a burning voice inside of you telling you that you HAVE to make music or are you cool just doing whatever? Are you 100% happy with your music or do you want to push yourself to improve? Are you cool playing WIPS for houseguests or do you want finished releases for the whole world to hear? Do you want your 90 year old self to be proud or call you out? Do you want to choose fear or love?

I’m asking you to bet on yourself, but it’s not a risky bet. The Dojo recipe has worked thousands of times before. You have 30 days to get a full refund if you change your mind. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. The only way you lose this bet is by not making music or booking your sessions.

Are you sick of waiting for ‘some day’?

Are you ready to Remix Your Life?

Great. Then I’ll see you in the Dojo.
